Lysa TerKeurst, like most women, has experiences when others irritate, disappoint, criticize, or do other things that bump into her happy. We come emotionally unglued as we stuff, explode, or react somewhere in between. Is it really possible to make emotions work for us instead of against us?
In this companion devotional, Lysa builds on the teaching from the bestselling book Unglued to encourage more peace and calm in your relationships. During this 60-day journey you will:
* Live in the grace of making imperfect progress even on those days when your emotions throw you for a loop.
* Be a more positive role model to your family and coworkers as you shift from overreacting to speaking life-giving words.
* Know with confidence how to resolve conflict in your closest relationships.
Including a daily opening Scripture, thought for the day, devotion, and closing prayer, this book will help you make progress in how you react to break the cycle of exploding or stuffing your emotions.
What is immediately striking about the Unglued Devotional is the author's charming welcome in a brief opening letter entitled "A Personal Word for You." Right away you find yourself wanting to be Lysa TerKeurst's friend. Many people have heard of the famous author and are well acquainted with her work. Though familiar with Proverbs 31 Ministries, this is actually my introduction to the prolific writer. The attraction she has to her countless fans is quickly obvious.
Admittedly, I have yet to read TerKeurst's bestselling book Unglued, but one does not need this as a co- or prerequisite to enjoy the warmth and motivation painted within the pages of this devotional. Each day is only about a page and a half long. There is, however, enough inspiration to impress on your heart as you carry these words throughout the day for reflection. As an undated 60 day layout the reader not only may enjoy it any time of the year, but should you stop for any reason at some point you can pick it up and finish at your leisure.
There are two sides to this shiny coin. First, the author provides comfort by sharing common imperfections which are universal. For we "all fall short of the glory of God" (Rm. 3:23) and the Lord is "no respecter of persons" (Acts 10:34). While reading the Unglued Devotional you are enveloped in a community of paralleled struggle with our brothers and sisters in Christ, knowing full well that we all negatively react on impulse to the chaos in this world. We are not alone in this fallen world. Moreover, TerKeurst assists the reader in making more conscious choices in their actions and reactions to everyday situations and circumstances, all with the foundation in the Word of God. She coaches on how to progressively live out our daily journey in a positive way that not only reflects onto others around us, but onto ourselves as well. It is a healthy course for the spirit, therefore the mind, body and soul. Powerful outlines, helpful alliterations, and reflective questionnaires equip this devotional with a magnetic draw.
Of course the Unglued Devotional makes a lovely gift. And aside from the author's writing skills, talent and successful objective of this literary walk, the best highlights for my own personal appreciation are the inundation of Scriptural verses and concluding prayers "in JESUS' name." A sweet, quick and very encouraging read, all I can say is how delightful this must be as an addition to its companion book, of which I am now searching for to add to my 2013 literary agenda.
